Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai announced that there will be no cross-platform gameplay between the 3DS and Wii U editions of the upcoming Super Smash Bros. titles.

Sakurai told Joystiq.com that it would be impossible to have cross-platform gameplay since both versions have many stages exclusive to their specific consoles. The 3DS version of the Smash Bros. title will use areas from handheld games such as Nintendogs and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, while the Wii U will use stages from the home console games like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Sakurai did mention that customized characters from the 3DS version can be transferred over to the Wii U edition, but he did not go into details about what exactly "customized characters" meant.

Should there be cross platform game play? Do you think this will be implemented later on if fans ask for it enough? Leave a comment below and tell us.
